The ESM500 is a wet chemical silver-plating process that is used to plate silver on top of the screen-printed contact fingers on the solar cell. The ESM500 deposits pure silver selectively onto the screen-printed Ag-paste while leaving the surrounding silicon nitride unaffected by the plating process.

The ESM500 process is autocatalytic which means that the silver is deposited without a current and that the silver layer can be deposited to virtually any desired thickness. As such, the ESM500 process is unique in the world.
